A visit to a local Native American museum in Colorado revealed some interesting facts and inspiring artwork, in spite of their lacking ability to display artifacts. Having read about the collection online, we were very much looking forward to visiting the Koshare Indian Museum in La Junta, Colorado. Excitement turned to disappointment when we were greeted by a plain white sign indicating the government was up to their usual antics. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act does serve a greater purpose. However, there should probably allowances for special situations, if nothing else, in the interest of continuing to educate and inform, while in process. In spite of the mandate, the space is not lacking in form or artistic presence. One of the most notable features is the largest self-supported log roof in the world. Spanning an 18-meter room, six hundred and twenty logs support their own weight of 36 metric tons. It is a n
Chaos Theory v2.0 ~ story & photos Photos courtesty of RichardHumpty Vission.com, NigelRichards.com, Freaky Flow by Mark Bartkiw, all others by todd dx/dt=delta*(y-x) dy/dt=r*x-y-x*z dz/dt=x*y-b*z The dictionary definition of chaos is turmoil, turbulence, primordial abyss, and undesired randomness, but scientists will tell you that chaos is something extremely sensitive to initial conditions. Chaos also refers to the question of whether or not it is possible to make good long-term predictions about how a system will act. A chaotic system can actually develop in a way that appears very smooth and ordered. "Physicists like to think that all you have to do is say, these are the conditions, now what happens next?" -Richard P. Feynman That is exactly what is going to happen on June 12th at the Uptown Theater. The conditions are below. What do YOU think is going to happen next? This month's spotlight party for the Central MidWest is Chaos Theory v2.0 : The A
A forecast of little more than continuing rain did not deter our trek over to Central Avenue in Kansas City, KS for the annual Dia de Muertos celebration. The memories of last year commanded a follow-up on this cultural festivity in the hometown. The afternoon had been relatively rain-free with the sun peeking through from time to time. Arriving around 4:30 pm, we almost immediately wished that we had come sooner. Within an hour of arrival, heavy rain sent folks scurrying for cover. We were fortunate enough to have stopped about that time to enjoy a little delicious local flavor, under a canopy, and from the very same folks as in the year before. In spite of uncooperative weather, a general air of warmth and amiability filled the streets of Central Avenue, overcome only by opportunities to enjoy music, dancing in the streets, and some of the most delicious food and treats to be found anywhere. The lineup proved every bit as enjoyable as the year before, ho
story & photos by Joe Hensen ~ What's the kind of party that makes you drive 10 hours just to go? A party that has AK1200, Icey, Richard Humpty Vission, Dieselboy and Micro as it's headliners. That's right. Ultra Concerts and Triad Dragons pulled together these five major DJs to bring you Caffeine. Nestled right next to the Colorado Mountains, this dance party was located in Littleton, Colorado, right outside Denver. The drive through the blandness of Kansas was worth it. We arrived at the party after a quick rest at the local Marriott Hotel. After parking the car down the street (no parking left at the venue), we came to the Line. It was about 100 yards long! We waited in the Colorado cold for an hour and a half, but knew already that this was going to be a party to remember. Once through the door (and into the warmth!), I found myself in a sea of people. The lights and sound were amazing. The venue was at Fat City Entertainment Center; a local indoor fun park. T
A chance meeting extended an opportunity for an evening littered with glowing puppetry and performances from the local troupe and volunteers of StoneLion Puppet Theater . Friday evening kicked off with a display of larger-than-life puppets along with a few acrobatic performances, followed on Saturday by art festival, music from local performers, as well as a parade of the giant puppets. The glowing menagerie returned Saturday evening, with dinosaurs, dragons, butterflies, hippopotamus, aliens, and other intrigues designed to amuse the young and young-at-heart. A hot air ballon and free riding tour around the mall courtesy of EZ Pedicabs topped a magnificent side trip to the day. Only lightly disappointed that we missed prior years' events, we definitely look forward to visiting this absolutely free event from StoneLion Puppet Theatre return next year.
