A local guidebook hinted at untold marvels collected within the walls of The
Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, demanding investigation at this particular bit of
intrigue beyond the glaring light and noise of the casinos.
Turns out, contemporary art works by established and emerging artists from all
over the world appear throughout the casino, mall, and hotel areas. Some of the
art is simply the standard in Vegas, littering the walls, floors and ceilings of
the interior, though there are numerous unique works lounging about as well.
Large scale photographs, paintings, and other mixed media types are literally
everywhere, and around every corner. Additionally, Art-o-Mat machines
offer the opportunity to purchase smaller through recycled cigarette vending
machines at a reasonable price.
Sculptures abound as well, coupled with 3D wall displays and video walls,
capturing the imagination and causing even the most hurried to pause for a
moment of contemplation.
One is literally surrounded by art at every turn, observing and being
observed.
Even the most ordinary symbols require artistic presentation. Entries to
personal facilities are adorned with unique pieces, as well as the transport
between levels.
The entirety is a collaborative presentation with the New York-based Art
Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning and
producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and
expanding awareness through contemporary art.
Various rides and thrills stretched out along N. Holmes this evening for the first night of GladFest 2024. Below the ferris wheel, surrounding parking lots and a couple of side streets hosted tents full of a random assortment of trinkets, crafts, and of course, politicians. One can never seem to get away from that latter crowd, though most regulated to a lot more removed from the usual bustle. Also available for the listening pleasure of everyone, amateur talent played their hearts out on the main stage. The event picks up again with a parade on Saturday morning and more carnival and crafts through the remainder of the day into the evening, and on into Sunday. It did not appear much different than previous years, though with a few less folks, and a bit pricier.
While visiting the great state of Arkansas, we had the opportunity to check out this event, which had been elusive for several years. The endurance of some of these hand manufactured boats was quite surprising, and amusing at times. Apparently, the theme of the year was Star Wars, and there were quite a variety of flotation constructions about the landscape of Sandy Beach. All of the contraptions endured the warm waters quite well, and really did not take on any water. It was quite surprising, considering the construction materials permitted. A few, while water tight, contained a few minor design flaws that caused disintegration under pressure. One almost fell apart at the starting line, and eventually did, prior to the finish line. It was quite a lot of fun though, and a full house on the beach in spite of threatening rain. We look forward to getting back to it again. view more photos from this event or add your own to the mix

by Andrea Johnson ~ photos by LuckyBrent ~ Interfuse was started in April 2004 by a group of Midwest Burners who noticed a need for a community event to bring the Burning Man principals to the central Midwest. 186 people from 14 different states showed up for the event, bringing art, theme camps and a sense of community with them. This year, for InterFuse 2005, over 360 people from all over America converged at the Ozark Avalon Campgrounds on May 13-15th. I attended InterFuse with seven of my good friends after finding the information posted on the Interfuse web site. Our ThemeCamp was “BubbleMania”, since I am known in some circles as the Laughing Bubble Chick. The name InterFuse means “To pour or spread between or among”. “Fuse” means, “to become liquefied from the heat. To become mixed or united by or as if by melting together.” The “F” in “Fuse” is capitalized because “Fuse” also signifies a small fire that prepares the way for a larger fire. Hailing from Victoria, BC, by way of Toronto, ON, Canada, Jeff Harris aka Plastic Motive has been active in the electronic music scene for well over a decade. At the age of 27, Jeff has run 3 different production companies (Sourkee, NeXstep and Blunted By Choice), as well as two very successful weekly nights (Re-Form and Funk’N Fridaze), and has played a major role in the Canadian underground electronic music scene. Jeff began spinning under the alias Plastic Motive in 1998 and landed his first gig in little under a year. Before that he would mix cd’s and tapes at school dances and friends birthday parties. Like most DJ’s, Jeff took to music at a very young age and it was no surprise that he would aspire to share his passion with the world. From 1999 to 2005 Plastic Motive held down DJ residency spots with 6 additional production companies (ONdaFLY, Goodfellaz, Funkadelic, Impure, Embryon and 420 Pro) all in the Southern Ontario area. He describes his style as “Nu Skool Electron
Betty Kang ~ All aboard for the Porterhouse express! Get ready for a ride with one of the most exciting US artists to be making the rounds on the global dancefloor. Steve Porter is set to release his first-ever mix compilation ‘PORTERHOUSE’ with 26 tracks melded together on 1xCD in his signature genre-defying, pulsating, energetic Porterhouse style. The album merges his DJing and production style with 9 of his own original tracks, further blurring the distinction between DJ and producer into one compelling artist to watch. The ‘PORTERHOUSE’ ideology of “no rules, no borders” to dance music resonates here on the album with an eclectic range of funked-up house beats with a techy-edge, breaks interludes, electro action, techno twists, and sound-clash attitude that blurs the boundaries between musical genres. All this is induced by his own re-edits and mixes that mold his highly individual DJ sets and track selection, as Steve soldiers on in his mission to furiously push his Porterhou
