A local guidebook hinted at untold marvels collected within the walls of The
Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, demanding investigation at this particular bit of
intrigue beyond the glaring light and noise of the casinos.
Turns out, contemporary art works by established and emerging artists from all
over the world appear throughout the casino, mall, and hotel areas. Some of the
art is simply the standard in Vegas, littering the walls, floors and ceilings of
the interior, though there are numerous unique works lounging about as well.
Large scale photographs, paintings, and other mixed media types are literally
everywhere, and around every corner. Additionally, Art-o-Mat machines
offer the opportunity to purchase smaller through recycled cigarette vending
machines at a reasonable price.
Sculptures abound as well, coupled with 3D wall displays and video walls,
capturing the imagination and causing even the most hurried to pause for a
moment of contemplation.
One is literally surrounded by art at every turn, observing and being
observed.
Even the most ordinary symbols require artistic presentation. Entries to
personal facilities are adorned with unique pieces, as well as the transport
between levels.
The entirety is a collaborative presentation with the New York-based Art
Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning and
producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and
expanding awareness through contemporary art.
Now that we’re setting into the new year, it means that the Winter Music Conference is just around the corner. Most marketing strategies for labels at this point is to hold off on the goods and then hit the shelves right in time for March in an assault to fill every potential WMC’ing DJ’s bag for the pool side parties. But as for me, this means very little material to review. Yet below you’ll find some creamers, steamers and pleasers for you to consider. C&M Productions – In Full Effect – Jan. 2006 mix From Switzerland, these European deep house dons always keep their music fresh and free. And while some of us DJ’s can barely find the time to put out a mix CD every year, these guys have made a healthy habit of putting one out about every month, making it available as a free mp3 download and building nearly a whole website around the promotion of their mixes! Call them C&M Productions – the DJ duo who’s maximized the benefits of promoting yourself through the mix set. And i...
Taking a break from the usual daylight activities created space to investigate a recent exhibit at the Nelson showcasing a unique multi-cultural and multi-faith dialog. The works presented are but a cross-section of shared astronomical knowledge, preserved and advanced by Muslim scientists during the European dark ages. Re-emerging during the Renaissance, thanks to the invention of the printing press, they communicate discoveries though beautifully crafted books, instruments, and images. Mapping the Heavens is part of the World Religions Initiative at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This exhibition is co-organized with the Linda Hall Library and is available for viewing through January 11, 2025.

The final night was finally here, and all the winners from the previous weekends, alongside their runner-up made one last appearance in their finest, then their own swim wear, and finally in swimwear provided by Hawaiian Tropic. Only one would go on to the regional contest. Shotgun Jackson provided his usual distractions on the microphone, with drinks and dancing, courtesy of beats from DJs Steve Thorell and Bill Pile, all around for those that stayed to the very end. view more photos from this event ... and if you want to see what led up to this date, the preliminaries ... Jackson Dean is one of our more favorite rising stars just now and this was a rare opportunity to catch him outside of the glitz and glam of an arena show. Indeed, we had been trying to catch up with him, in just this type of format, for more than a year. Each attempt was thwarted for one reason or another and we had kind of given up hope. Then comes Q104 (KBEQ-FM) with their annual Christmas show featuring none other than this elusive musician. Hosted by PBR Big Sky at the Power & Light District, with proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, this proved the perfect opportunity to catch his act, up close and personal, and unplugged. This is the true test of the talent of any musician, to get up on stage with nothing more than their voice, instrument and stage lighting. Jackson Dean did not disappoint either. A country musician who is not entirely country, he is rhythm and blues, and a little...
