A local guidebook hinted at untold marvels collected within the walls of The
Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, demanding investigation at this particular bit of
intrigue beyond the glaring light and noise of the casinos.
Turns out, contemporary art works by established and emerging artists from all
over the world appear throughout the casino, mall, and hotel areas. Some of the
art is simply the standard in Vegas, littering the walls, floors and ceilings of
the interior, though there are numerous unique works lounging about as well.
Large scale photographs, paintings, and other mixed media types are literally
everywhere, and around every corner. Additionally, Art-o-Mat machines
offer the opportunity to purchase smaller through recycled cigarette vending
machines at a reasonable price.
Sculptures abound as well, coupled with 3D wall displays and video walls,
capturing the imagination and causing even the most hurried to pause for a
moment of contemplation.
One is literally surrounded by art at every turn, observing and being
observed.
Even the most ordinary symbols require artistic presentation. Entries to
personal facilities are adorned with unique pieces, as well as the transport
between levels.
The entirety is a collaborative presentation with the New York-based Art
Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning and
producing ambitious public art projects, reaching new audiences and
expanding awareness through contemporary art.
Hunger demanded increasing attention today, while passing along 39th Street near KU Medical Center. Noticing a few options not previously recognized, a spot for parking on the street quickly opened its arms. Noon found not many spots. Tiki Taco was the spot that had actually caught attention. It turned out to be a super friendly and delectable choice, also offering some appealing and intriguing skateboard art displays. This may just be the best place in the area to grab a quick mouthful of deliciousness.
The final night was finally here, and all the winners from the previous weekends, alongside their runner-up made one last appearance in their finest, then their own swim wear, and finally in swimwear provided by Hawaiian Tropic. Only one would go on to the regional contest. Shotgun Jackson provided his usual distractions on the microphone, with drinks and dancing, courtesy of beats from DJs Steve Thorell and Bill Pile, all around for those that stayed to the very end. view more photos from this event ... and if you want to see what led up to this date, the preliminaries ... It is almost as if one cannot take more than a handful of steps without encountering art in Kansas City. This random encounter appears on the side of Surreal Tattoo Studio in Mid-Town near State Line. Either I missed capturing the artists name, or it was not included.
It was all about the Deere this weekend, climbing on them, walking under them, and admiring their shiny coats at the Western Farm Show in Kansas City. It was not just all about John Deere, I suppose. They did have the biggest display in the building though, and nobody was shy about climbing aboard for a look around. That was the intent after all. Two huge halls contained a variety of technology and work equipment, while another two areas showcased an array of odds and ends in support of, and dedicated to everyday farm and ranch life, to include a few goats.
Branson is quite the music and entertainment city, with some resident performances lasting more than 50 years. Pierce Arrow has been putting on their little schtick for 25 years, promising award-winning comedy and music by "an electrifying band." Recently, they changed venues from their old theater under the same name, to that of Reza Theater. That is where we caught up with their act, after some friends offered up tickets. They turned out a relatively good production, for an intimate Monday afternoon gig, during Spring Break week. Very likely, it not same performance audiences typically witness on a Saturday night during peak season. The tour through the decades offered up some genuinely good music, performed very well, though missed a few points. The 1980s and 1990s were entirely omitted from the agenda, and 1960s almost completely ignored the flower children. The narrator was awesome, stirring giggles from everyone in the room, particularly ...
No other image stands out along West 39th better than this amazing bit of graffiti art, instantly recognizable as one from local artist "Scribe." Completed in 2014, it is holding up really well for 20 years old. This huge mural is always a welcome greeting to the tiny little district that straddles the state line. If they ever replace this, it should definitely be another piece from KC's own Scribe.
