While lurking about Las Vegas, one of the conferences hosted a little Pub Quiz, with food, drinks, a few giggles, and prizes.  This was probably not on the top of the list of things to do, but turned out a fairly fun way to spend a couple of hours in the evening, before heading off to other priorities. While it did not attract everyone in attendance at this conference, there was quite good crowd, who enjoyed themselves immensely.

mapping the heavens

  Taking a break from the usual daylight activities created space to investigate a recent exhibit at the Nelson showcasing a unique multi-cultural and multi-faith dialog.   The works presented are but a cross-section of shared astronomical knowledge, preserved and advanced by Muslim scientists during the European dark ages.  Re-emerging during the Renaissance, thanks to the invention of the printing press, they communicate discoveries though beautifully crafted books, instruments, and images. Mapping the Heavens  is part of the World Religions Initiative at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This exhibition is co-organized with the Linda Hall Library and is available for viewing through January 11, 2025.

Another and I headed up to Chicago for a little rave on the south side for upcoming very first feature story in the new format coming in February 2004.  A full and awesome lineup included Donald Glaude, Charles Feelgood, Baby Anne, Frankie Bones, Adam X, Heather Hart, Mixin Marc, Danny the Wildchild, Phantom 45, with massive local support from CZR, Adam Peace, DJ Funk, Paul Anthony, Jes One John Curley, Chris Tomason, Submerge 101, Cypher, Diva D, Mike G, Vialgo, Phana C, Inphinity, Limit, Shawn Edwards & MJB, Breakdown B & DJ Justin.  It was a wild night, but we only stayed until just after Baby Anne.  We headed back to KC shortly after that, half-wishing we had stayed.     view more photos from this event

The final night was finally here, and all the winners from the previous weekends, alongside their runner-up made one last appearance in their finest, then their own swim wear, and finally in swimwear provided by Hawaiian Tropic.  Only one would go on to the regional contest.  Shotgun Jackson provided his usual distractions on the microphone, with drinks and dancing, courtesy of beats from DJs Steve Thorell and Bill Pile, all around for those that stayed to the very end. view more photos from this event ... and if you want to see what led up to this date, the preliminaries ... Jackson Dean is one of our more favorite rising stars just now and this was a rare opportunity to catch him outside of the glitz and glam of an arena show.  Indeed, we had been trying to catch up with him, in just this type of format, for more than a year.  Each attempt was thwarted for one reason or another and we had kind of given up hope.  Then comes Q104 (KBEQ-FM) with their annual Christmas show featuring none other than this elusive musician. Hosted by PBR Big Sky at the Power & Light District, with proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, this proved the perfect opportunity to catch his act, up close and personal, and unplugged.  This is the true test of the talent of any musician, to get up on stage with nothing more than their voice, instrument and stage lighting.
