We dropped by for a look at progress on various forms of art littering the sidewalks of the City Market this evening.  Chores and other obligations had made it impossible to make it down for the festivities during normal hours, and the same reasons made visiting the next day improbable.

The early evening viewing proved perfect for unhindered access to the art in progress. Everyone had  mostly left for the day.  A few lingered, finishing up their goals.  Judging by the number in progress, there did not appear to be quite as many participants as in years before.  What was on display looked good, although not quite on par with some of the displays witnessed in the past.

32nd world championship cardboard boat races

While visiting the great state of Arkansas, we had the opportunity to check out this event, which had been elusive for several years.  The endurance of some of these hand manufactured boats was quite surprising, and amusing at times. Apparently, the theme of the year was Star Wars, and there were quite a variety of flotation constructions about the landscape of Sandy Beach. All of the contraptions endured the warm waters quite well, and really did not take on any water.  It was quite surprising, considering the construction materials permitted. A few, while water tight, contained a few minor design flaws that caused disintegration under pressure. One almost fell apart at the starting line, and eventually did, prior to the finish line. It was quite a lot of fun though, and a full house on the beach in spite of threatening rain.  We look forward to getting back to it again. view more photos from this event or add your own to the mix

djs are alive

Michael Bradshaw ~  photos by David Wells ~  As the Thursday night crowd at Tribeca’s Canal Room closed around the stage to view the newly formed and moderately hyped, DJ’s Are Alive, something strange happened. No headphones were passed from one selector to the next, no one got on the mic and tried to hype the dance floor for an oncoming DJ. Instead, instruments were picked up, keyboards, drum machines and samplers were warmed to a start with the flick of a switch. Five individuals took to the stage and started to play music - House music. DJ’s Are Alive, an unfortunately named dream team made up of legendary established DJ’s and producers including, Scumfrog, Static Revenger, D:fuse, Karen W. and DJ Skribble, started to open a can of whoop-ass on New York City Thursday night, the likes of which it had never seen. phocas on decks

photo by Jen Runnels From me to you... ;) March snuck up on on us this month and none of the folks that were supposed to have done this column followed through, so I thought I would throw one of my old mixes out there. It was only recently that I stumbled across this mix that I had made for Sherri a couple of years ago. I thought it might be a good anniversary present, but never really gave her this copy with the last 4 or 5 tracks, until now. So, happy 20 babe... let's see where this highway goes, eh? Honestly, the mix itself is mostly just a bunch of trax that I had on vinyl that she really liked. It's not perfect by any means and I definitely don't know what you would categorize it as. Kinda House... mostly. Whatever you wanna call it, have a listen. The mixer I was using had no channel-by-channel EQ, only one on the master, so the levels are a tiny bit off here and there, but not too much. Hope you dig it. What a completely crazy month and there really wasn't anything going on. What's up with that? I can't say the phocas staff hasn't been hard at work trying to find some good stories over the last month though. There always seems to be so little to do and so much time. Wait a minute, scratch that... reverse it. Out of the norm this month, I made trips to the 2 Year Anniversary Party for the Wednesday Perk which filled that little place to capacity, as well as the Grand Re-Opening of the Empire Room where Bill Pill kept people dancing all night long. I played out again at Davey's Uptown. The photo to the right was taken that night. I love my Record Bag! That was so gracious of the DEA to keep us in mind when they created these bags, though I still don't understand why they would think we're "Dancing with Darkness". Maybe it's a typo? cloudy kite day

Wandering north to the small town of Lawson found larger than life kites flying.  The event was to have been under a partly cloudy sky, but the weather proved itself uncooperative.  Steel gray skies dominated the day, with a cold wind keeping things at a barely tolerable state. The lake was choppy, though scenic in its simplicity and, the 2.5 km hike around the lake, refreshing. The event likely would have drawn many more to the space on a sunny day.    Food trucks stood at the ready for the throngs, ultimately left patiently waiting in the cold. Kite-building activities could not be located, though a variety were available for purchase at what seemed much higher than market value.  Future dates under more copacetic conditions will likely amass a more excited event. . . . further reading Kite Day at Lawson Lake
